Since August 25, users of version 8.1 or 8.5 of Windows Live Messenger are offered the update to version 14 of Windows Live Messenger. This update is currently not mandatory but only a warning is also valid for users of versions of the 14.x branch before the build number 14.0.8089 but for those below the warning will begin to emerge in mid October.
From mid-September, users of versions 8.1 and 8.5 of Windows Live Messenger will be mandatory to update their version of WLM for other (earlier version at 14.0.8089) this phase already starts in late October.

Ten years ago, Microsoft launched MSN and since the service managed to reach several hundred million users worldwide, according to the blog Windows Live users are estimated to number 330 million to be active each month.

Since update of Windows Live Hotmail, you can connect to Windows Live Messenger directly through your browser without having to install anything as was the case with Gmail for example.
This function is available only with Firefox and Internet Explorer.
- To log in to Messenger from your mailbox, go http://mail.live.com
- Once connected, like click on the screenshot below on Messenger (1 on the catch).
- Then click connect to Messenger (web) (2 capture)
- Once connected to the Web Messenger, then click View Available Messenger contacts
- The list then appears to start an instant conversation, click on the image of your contact and then send an instant message (the contact's status)
During a conversation, you can not send emoticons wizz but pass.
This version included with Windows Live Hotmail is one that existed previously under the name of Web Messenger.
